How to Use Your Dental Benefits Before They Reset in January
If you have dental insurance, the end of the year is the perfect time to check how much of your coverage you have used. Many dental plans reset on January 1, and any benefits you don’t use by then may be lost. Here’s what to know so you can get the most out of the coverage you already pay for.
Why the End of the Year Matters
Most dental plans work on a calendar year. They include an annual maximum, which is the most the plan will pay toward your care in a year, and many cover two preventive cleanings and exams per year. On January 1, those benefits often start over, and unused benefits generally do not roll over. Check your plan details or ask us, since every plan is different.
Terms Worth Knowing
- Annual maximum: the most your plan will pay for your dental care in a plan year.
- Deductible: the amount you pay before your plan begins covering certain services. If you have already met it this year, finishing treatment now may cost less than waiting until it resets.
- Preventive care: cleanings, exams and X-rays, which many plans cover at a high level.
Ways to Use Your Benefits Before Year End
- Schedule your second cleaning and exam of the year if you haven’t had it yet.
- Finish any treatment you have been putting off, like a filling or a crown.
- Check whether your plan covers part of other treatments you have been considering.
- Use any flexible spending account (FSA) funds that may also expire at the end of the year.
